Introduction

I've had my own website for a few years now. It's mostly about my motorcycles - especially, the BMW R1100RS, the BMW K75 and the Gilera X9 500. You can find it here:

Like many people, I struggle to find the time to update the site and I've felt for a while now that a blog is the way to go - so here it is.

The "launch" of this blog co-incides with my aquisition of a Nokia E90 Communicatior, probably the best (and certainly the most converged) mobile phone/pda/satnav device available today. I have also placed an order for a shiny new Gilera GP800, definitely the the best scooter available today.

I'm a terminably incurable researcher. I spend days on the net hunting for reviews and information before making any major purchase. Here's my chance to let others see the results of my research, read my opinions & reviews and share my experiences.

Hi Terry,

Been loving your long-term review of the GP800, something that the entire motorcycling press has failed to carry out, and subject of great interest to me for practical purposes.

My partner and I will be moving from London to Warwickshire later on this year, leaving me with an approx 110 mile each way commute once a week for work. I'm hoping to do this by bike rather than train but suspect my beloved '95 NTV650 (pre-Deauville and thus entirely naked) may prove a little uncomfortable due to vibration, high footpegs and absence of weather protection.

I've considered a few motorcycle alternatives but have been warming to the idea of a maxi-scooter for some time, not being one of those motorcyclists that entirely disregard the potential of modern scoots (started biking on an old T5 Vespa which I have very fond memories of). And I was hoping you'd be kind enough answer a few questions...

1. Just how much weather protection does your GP800 (and presumably most 400+cc maxi scoots) afford you in comparison to a conventional faired motorcycle?

2. What's it like in terms of long-distance comfort at speed? (This is one of my main areas of concern, bearing in mind I'll be doing pretty much the entire M40 on a weekly basis)

3. How well has the bike been bearing up over long distances? (My other main area of concern - one of the great attractions of a scooter vs a conventional bike is the lower level of maintenance they apparently require, although I could be barking up the wrong tree here! This is one of the reasons I currently ride a shaft-drive bike...)

4. What made you choose the GP800 over the Yamaha T-Max or Honda Silverwing, the two other most obvious choices in the world of large-capacity, twin cylinder scooters? Or even something a little smaller such as the excellent Suzuki Burgman 400?

Many thanks in advance and I look forward to reading your future posts.

Alex
